What did Diezel complete? The peak of '90s high gain and the design of 'separation'

Soldano solved 'deep but not muddy' in 1987. Where did high gain go next? One clear peak sits in 1994: Peter Diezel's VH4. The theme had shifted — from depth of gain to separation and definition. How to keep every note apart, outlined, inside deep distortion.

Last time I wrote how the Soldano SLO-100 made high gain that was deep but not muddy, through "distribution, not amount." That was 1987. So where did the road go from there?

One clear peak sits in 1994: Peter Diezel's VH4. An amp said to have set a new standard for high gain the moment Adam Jones (Tool) and James Hetfield (Metallica) made its sound. This piece digs into how far Diezel pushed the road Soldano opened, and what he "completed." The key isn't depth of gain. It's a design philosophy one step further on: separation and definition.

1994: a monster built for himself

The VH4's origin is a little unusual.

Peter Diezel first built the VH4 not to sell, but only to satisfy himself. Then fellow guitarists who heard it flooded him with "build me one too," and he reluctantly turned it into a product — that was 1994. In other words, this amp was born not from market research or cost accounting but from one builder's pure desire: "this is the distortion I want." The thing CSL has written many times — "an amp is a pile of someone's decisions" — rarely applies as cleanly as it does here.

And that private ideal ended up moving an era. The VH4 counts among the very few amps that permanently rewrote the sound of rock and metal guitar. A design pursued for one person's satisfaction became a public standard. Here is one completed form of '90s high gain.

Four channels as a philosophy — no compromise, stack it all

The VH4's layout is, as the name says, four channels: Clean, Crunch, Mega, Lead. Each has its own independent gain, EQ, and master.

This is not mere versatility. It's a philosophy. The Soldano SLO-100 was a two-channel amp with an exceptional overdrive and clean. Diezel went from there toward: "clean, crunch, heavy rhythm, singing lead — stack every one of them, independently, in one amp, with no compromise." Because even the EQ is independent per channel, you can meet contradictory demands at once — cut and tighten the rhythm while lifting the mids to make the lead sing. And with MIDI switching, it drops straight into a complex rig.

That current I wrote about before — recalling multiple sounds from one amp, repeatably — the VH4 carries it to the summit of high gain. It's the design of an era that doesn't just "make" a sound but "composes and recalls" it.

The Mega channel — a byword for "tight"

You can't discuss the VH4 without the Mega channel.

This is the sound that became Diezel's signature, covering everything from highly-defined heavy rhythm to a soaring solo. Above all, the tightness of its rhythm tone was decisive. The low end is controlled, each chugged note stays separated instead of crushing, and even fast riffs don't lose their outline. That temporal outline — fast attack, short decay — the Mega channel achieved at a remarkably high level.

That Adam Jones's heavy, intricate riffs and James Hetfield's chugs bonded with the VH4 was no accident. In the '90s, metal's rhythm kept getting faster, heavier, lower — precise, tight picking in down-tunings. The Mega channel answered head-on the "un-muddy, un-lagging, defined low end" that music demanded. The demand from the music and the answer from the design meshed here.

One element supporting that tightness is the crafting of the power stage's negative feedback. As I wrote before, how feedback is applied governs whether playing dynamics come back intact or get averaged out, and whether the lows tighten or loosen. Diezel designed the whole thing — down to this invisible parameter — in the direction of holding deep distortion while tightening the lows and standing the outline up. The Mega channel's tightness is the result of a coherent design reaching all the way to the power stage, not just front-end gain handling.

What Diezel completed — from "depth" to "separation"

So what advanced from Soldano to Diezel? In a word, the theme moved from "depth" to "separation and definition."

What Soldano showed was "a distribution that stays un-muddy even at deep gain." Diezel inherited that as a premise, then pushed further — how, inside deep distortion, to separate every note and define its outline. Depth of gain is no longer what you compete on. Deep is a given; what's asked is how much sound survives, un-unraveled, within that depth. Chords legible as chords; fast chugging that doesn't clump; a low end that doesn't lag and swallow everything else. This "definition" is exactly what Diezel presented at a high level of completion.

This lifted the very yardstick of high gain a notch — from "how much does it distort" to "how much does it not collapse when it distorts." That's the point '90s high gain reached. And the VH4's success became a standard chased by later Diezels — the Herbert, Hagen, Paul, D-Moll — and by boutique makers worldwide.

The spec sheet, again, doesn't say

Here's the viewpoint CSL always returns to.

The VH4's greatness doesn't appear on the spec sheet either. "100W," "four channels," "independent EQ" — as words, not so different from other multi-channel high-gain amps. But the Mega channel's defined low end and tightness aren't written, not one character, in the channel-count or wattage fields. As with Soldano, it exists only inside the sound, as the totality of judgments that don't show up in numbers — the drive of each stage, the inter-stage tidying, the band handling, the feedback design. "Separation" and "definition" are qualities you only grasp by listening and playing; a catalog can't convey them.

So comparing high-gain amps by stage count or gain markings won't reveal what Diezel completed. What you should read is the designer's judgment: inside deep distortion, what did they try to protect — separation, thickness, or rawness? CSL tries to grasp gear by "the state it was sounding in," partly so as not to drop this core of design that lives outside the spec.

In short

What the Diezel VH4 completed is not "deep distortion." Deep, Soldano had already solved. What the VH4 pursued is separation and definition within that depth. It composes sound without compromise across four channels, and with the Mega channel it achieved a heavy rhythm that is un-muddy, un-lagging, and clearly outlined. Born in 1994 as one builder's private ideal, this amp lifted the yardstick of '90s high gain from "how much does it distort" to "how much does it not collapse when it distorts."

And that peak, too, survives only inside the sound, as an invisible judgment the spec sheet never writes. Rather than chase the gain numbers, listen for what is protected within the depth — that is the most essential way to read the high-gain history running from Soldano to Diezel.
