Last time I wrote that an amp is a pile of someone's decisions. Today I want to push one step further.
Here's a curious thing. For decades, the guitar amp itself hasn't changed all that much. There are tubes, a tone stack, a power stage. The basic structure is as old as ever. And yet the sound players make has changed greatly with each era.
Why? Because the "control layer" that decides the sound has moved, little by little, from inside the amp to outside.
Once, the sound was decided inside the amp
In the old days, making a sound meant turning the amp's knobs.
Raise the gain, set the tone, push with the master. Distortion, EQ, compression — all completed inside the amp. What the player could do was find a good spot within that. Guitar, amp, cab, and room. The sound was decided in this physical chain, and the center of decision was, without doubt, inside the amp.
So amp design of the time aimed at "how much good sound can be completed within one box." That vintage Fenders and Marshalls have a dense character from few knobs is because of this. One or two channels, three EQ knobs. Into that limited circuit, a philosophy of completing the sound is packed. What we call great amps are mostly products of this "complete in one box" era. Conversely, back then there was no idea of letting the sound out. The amp had to take on everything.
Control stepped out to the floor
Eventually, the center of sound-making began moving to the floor.
One trigger was the booster. Insert a pedal like a Tube Screamer in front and the signal is conditioned before it enters the amp, changing the quality of the distortion itself. Rather than raising the amp's gain to distort, you build the groundwork of distortion ahead of the amp and send it in. The same amp shows a different face depending on what you place in front. The culture of carving bands with an external graphic EQ points the same way. The decisive part of the sound began moving to a small box outside the amp.
At this point, the amp changed role from a "finished product" to a "foundation" that receives the signal. Players began making the sound in front of, and around, the amp rather than in the amp itself. Design inside the amp didn't stop. But part of the authority over the sound certainly went outside the amp — to the floor. That pedalboards ballooned is the visible result of this move.
The rack era — "assemble and recall" the control
After the floor, control gathered once into the rack.
In the late '80s, huge systems appeared that stacked a preamp, power amp, spatial effects, and a switcher into a rack and switched them all at once via MIDI. Sound-making changed from "playing one amp" to "assembling multiple units, programming them, and recalling them." What was decisive here was that the sound became something composed, memorized, and reproduced. From a sound made on the spot to a sound assembled and saved in advance. The control layer stepped one remove from the amp's physics into the abstraction of "system design."
This rack culture eventually faded for its weight and complexity, and many players returned to the "head and cab" form. But the very idea born there — "assemble a sound and recall it" — didn't disappear. It would flow, unchanged, into the modeler later.
Modern metal designs the "input signal," not the "amp"
Where control's outward move sharpened most is modern high gain.
Fortin-style pedals, fine parametric EQ, crafting of the input stage. Modern metal's sound is, in large part, made not by distorting at the amp and then tidying, but by designing the signal itself before it enters the amp. How much low end to trim before sending it in, which band to lift to make tightness. The prep before distorting decides the final tightness. As I wrote in "what does tight in metal mean," that tightness comes not from the amount of distortion but from signal management ahead of the amp.
What to cut, what to lift, at what density to send it in — the decisive design moved to the amp's entrance. The same amp becomes a different thing depending on what's in front. If so, the lead of the sound is no longer the amp alone. It's the signal entering the amp. The amp became one final stage that rings the designed signal it receives.
And after Kemper, control moved to software
There's one more layer, further out.
With Kemper and modelers, the amp became a master original that gets turned into data. Once profiled, distortion, EQ, cab, and mic can be freely recombined in the software layer. The control layer finally left the amp's physics and moved into the DSP. The rack's "assemble and recall" culture, in changed form, flows in here too. What once required stacking heavy gear now exists as numbers inside one box.
Inside the amp → the floor pedal → the rack system → the design of the input signal → software. The center of control has moved, in this order, consistently outward and toward the abstract. That single line is what this article's title means.
So "did the amp evolve?" asks the wrong question
Lined up this way, the question "has the amp stopped evolving?" starts to look slightly off.
The amp hasn't stopped. But because the place that decides the sound moved outside the amp, the change is just hard to see when you watch the amp alone. Tubes, tone stack, power stage — the basic structure is as old as ever. That the output changed with each era is because the change happened not "inside the amp" but "in the control layer around it." What evolved wasn't the amp but the map of sound-making. So the right question isn't "did the amp evolve?" but "where did the place that decides the sound move to?"
And here's the interesting part: however clever the outer layers get, the nature of the one amp at the innermost point keeps working as the foundation. Prep it with pedals, recombine it in DSP — how the underlying amp distorts and returns your touch remains in the core of the sound to the end. What you choose as the foundation changes how the outer design works. Which is exactly why honestly recording the amp itself still has meaning. However far control moves out, the core worth recording doesn't move. What CSL does is the work of keeping that immovable foundation, conditions and all.
In short
Even though the amp body hasn't changed much, the sound kept changing because the control layer moved outside the amp.
Inside the amp → the floor pedal → the rack system → the design of the input signal → software. Authority moved outward in this order. So rather than "did the amp evolve?", asking "where did the place that decides the sound move to?" sees these decades better.
And the nature of the one amp that serves as foundation still works. However far the authority moves out, what supports the sound at the deepest point is, after all, the raw character one amp holds.
