Ask a certain generation of guitarists about rehearsal-studio amps and roughly the same answer comes back.
The JC-120, or the JCM900.
The memory that those were the only two choices.
This isn't about gear preference. It's simply that what was placed in studios then really was so.
And this fact of "what was placed there" still casts a shadow over the verdict on the JCM900 today.
Is the JCM900 really a bad amp? Or was it just placed in a bad state? I want to think about this separately.
The memory of amps placed in studios
From the late '90s into the early 2000s, many Japanese rehearsal studios had a fixed cast of gear.
A drum set. A bass amp. And a guitar amp.
The staple guitar amps were the Roland JC-120 and the Marshall JCM900.
The JC-120 is a transistor clean amp. Tough above all, it rings the same however anyone uses it. Distortion was assumed to be made with pedals.
The JCM900 is a tube Marshall yet has a master volume and distorts reasonably. As an amp that makes the Marshall sound, it was installed in many studios.
So clean and distortion, transistor and tube, domestic and British. Two amps of differing character stood side by side.
Having only two options isn't itself bad. The problem is in what state those two were placed.
Why the JC-120 didn't break and the JCM900 went rough
The JC-120 rarely breaks.
A transistor amp, needing no tube replacement, it makes the same sound for a while however roughly handled. For a studio — an environment worked hard daily by an unspecified many — it was as suited as could be.
The JCM900 isn't like that.
A tube amp's power tubes and preamp tubes are consumables. The more it's rung, the more it degrades. A studio amp is rung loud by band after band, morning to night.
On top of that, the footswitch goes missing, the knobs are frozen at someone's setting, or one channel alone is off.
The speaker and cabinet too, from years of hard use, are often not in their original state.
So the JCM900 that many touched in studios was likely not a "healthy JCM900."
Worn tubes. Sagged speakers. A unit left unserviced. Rung loud, in limited time, making a sound in a hurry.
That memory remains within the generation as the impression "JCM900 = somehow not pleasant."
The experience of "a Marshall, yet not pleasant"
Quite a few surely felt this at the time.
It's supposed to be a Marshall, yet it doesn't become the Marshall sound I imagined.
There's an image of the Marshall heard in magazines and on records. Expecting that, you raise the JCM900's knobs. But only a gritty distortion comes, never reaching the cored pleasantness.
Was this a problem of the JCM900's design itself?
Here I want to pause once.
The JCM900 touched in studios was usually under conditions like these.
Degraded tubes. An unserviced unit. A room where you couldn't make the proper volume. A short slot. An unfamiliar control layout.
Under these conditions, the sound the designer intended can't come out. Any great amp won't show its true worth in this situation.
The experience "a Marshall, yet not pleasant" certainly existed. But it doesn't necessarily reflect the amp's own nature as is.
Is it a problem of the amp itself, or of the environment?
Separating this is the subject of this article.
The verdict on the JCM900 mixes at least three layers.
First, the verdict on the design itself — the amp's own nature: circuit, gain structure, power-tube choice.
Second, the unit's condition — the situation that one amp was in: degradation of tubes and speaker, presence of servicing.
Third, the usage environment — the conditions on the playing side: volume limits, slot time, familiarity with the controls.
The studio JCM900 experience was a place where these three overlapped in the worst form.
And for many, the first place they met the JCM900 was precisely that studio.
First impressions remain strong. So the memory "JCM900 = that studio amp" sets, jumbled with the design verdict.
Moreover, the JCM900 has models of differing character: Dual Reverb, MkIII, SL-X. What was common in studios was the multi-channel Dual Reverb system, but in memory they're all easily lumped as "JCM900."
The name is one, but the contents aren't one.
Ringing a healthy unit in your own environment
So how do you reach the verdict on the design itself?
You can only re-align the conditions, one by one.
Prepare a serviced, healthy unit. Choose one whose tubes and speaker are in their original state.
Ring it in your own environment. Face it in a place not chased by slot time, where you decide the volume and controls yourself.
What CSL handles is the JCM900 SL-X 2500, a single-channel high-gain model. It's an amp to place in a different context from the multi-channel Dual Reverb often remembered in studios.
The unit CSL handles is serviced and in healthy condition. So it's off the studio conditions of "ringing a degraded unit in a hurry."
Even the same name "JCM900," the conditions placed are completely different.
Ringing under these conditions, only then can you make a verdict on the design itself. Whether that's good or bad becomes a matter to confirm from here with the real amp.
At least, turning the studio memory directly into a design verdict isn't fair.
Why CSL separates "memory" from "record"
When CSL records a real amp, what it most wants to avoid is recording a preconception as is.
The memory "the JCM900 isn't good" is a strong story shared within a generation.
A story is convenient. It's done in one phrase. But a convenient story covers the facts each real unit holds.
What CSL wants to keep isn't the reverse story "the JCM900 is a great" either.
At that moment, under what conditions, how that unit actually rang. That record.
So when recording, we make the conditions explicit. Which cabinet, where the mic is placed, with what input it was rung.
If the conditions are written, the listener can receive it as a record, not a memory.
"That studio's JCM900" and "a serviced unit rung under fixed conditions" are different things, even by the same name. Keep the latter, conditionally. That's CSL's way.
Not to fan unit variation as a source of anxiety. Even the same model, the sound changes with condition and environment. Which is exactly why there's meaning in recording with conditions explicit.
In short
The era of only JC or JCM900 certainly existed.
That memory is real. But what it reflects may be the experience of ringing a degraded unit in a constraint-filled environment, not the JCM900's design itself.
The JC-120 didn't break and was always the same. The JCM900's tubes are consumables, worked hard, often not in their original state.
The experience "a Marshall, yet not pleasant" mixes separate layers: a problem of the amp itself, the unit's condition, and the usage environment.
Concluding "the JCM900 isn't good" without separating these is hasty.
Separate the memory of experience from the verdict on the gear itself, once.
Then, ring a healthy unit, in your own environment, with conditions explicit.
The verdict can be redone from there.
