A master gets good tone even from a cheap amp, so gear is irrelevant — skill is everything. Half of that, I think, is true. But in the other half, this phrase hides the design side of the story. This piece unpicks the myth from both the playing and the gear. Not to deny the "hand's sound," but to see why the hand's sound holds up — its mechanism.
The "hand's sound" really exists
First, the hand's sound is real. This is beyond doubt.
Picking strength, angle of attack, pick depth, how muting is held, the speed and width of vibrato, the timing of hammer-ons and slides. Same guitar, same amp, and the sound changes if the player changes. Record it and you'll hear it at once. The playing is, unmistakably, making the signal.
Especially the signal before the amp — the dynamics and nuance picking produces, how the attack rises — is the part the hands make directly. A person's individuality rides here. That you can sometimes tell who played the same phrase is because this way of making the signal differs.
But it's the gear that receives that signal
From here is the part the myth omits.
The delicate signal the hands make — how it's returned is decided by the amp. For the same picking dynamics, one amp amplifies them as is and lets you hear the grain of the moment you dug in. Another crushes and evens them, returning a similar sound whether you hit hard or soft. Whether the hand's nuance is "heard" depends not only on the sender's skill but on the receiver's design.
As we saw in the previous piece (negative feedback), whether the power stage's feedback is shallow or deep changes whether playing dynamics return as is or get averaged out. If the front stage has wide headroom, a hard-picked attack passes without clipping. A heavily compressed design lifts even softly played notes, narrowing the range of nuance. Concretely, a plexi-era Marshall and a Vox AC30 are known for responding honestly to picking dynamics and guitar volume — play light, it leans clean; play hard, it distorts. Conversely, a deeply distorted high-gain amp or a heavily compressed setting returns a similar sound whether you hit hard or soft. So "amps that let the hand's sound out" and "amps that crush the hand's sound" clearly exist.
Why a master gets "good tone even from a cheap amp"
So why can a master get good tone even from a budget amp?
One reason is simply that the quality of the signal is high. Good picking sends in a good signal whatever the gear. But there's another, easily overlooked reason. The master changes how they play to match how that gear returns.
On a heavily compressed amp, they deliberately even out the grain rather than use dynamics. On an easily crushed amp, they pull back a little to leave headroom. On a hard amp, they soften the attack. Unconsciously, they meet the gear's design halfway. So "the same sound from any gear" is, precisely, "landing on the intended sound with any gear, by adapting to it." Skill is the power to make the signal and, at once, the power to change how you make it to suit the receiver.
Sensitivity is designed
If so, even the sense of "the hand's sound comes out as is" is actually something designed.
Only with a vessel that can pick up the delicacy of the playing does the hand's sound become sound. On an amp that returns a 0.1 difference in picking, that 0.1 has meaning. On an amp that crushes that difference, however delicately you play, the sound you hear is the same. The resolution of the hand's expression has an upper limit not only in the player but on the vessel's side too.
Neither hands alone nor gear alone. That sound rises when the two mesh. The sensitivity of the playing and the design that receives and returns it. It's the multiplication of the two.
What the myth hides
Stop the story at "in the end it's the hands" and two things become invisible.
One is the fact that the hand's nuance passes differently through different gear. Even played by the same person, change the amp and "how much of you comes out" changes. The other is why masters choose and stick with particular gear. They fuss over gear not to supplement skill, but because they're searching for the design that returns their playing most honestly.
The more someone trusts their hands, the more they fuss over the vessel that passes them. It seems contradictory but isn't. To make the hand's sound hold up, you need the vessel.
"Trusting the hands" and "choosing gear" don't conflict
"In the end it's the hands" is convenient but a crude summary.
Restated precisely: the hands make the signal. The gear decides how that signal is returned. The sound rises where the two mesh. A master doesn't let go of particular gear because they found the partner that returns their playing most honestly.
So choosing gear isn't doubting your skill. It's searching for the vessel that best lets your hands be heard. Trusting the hand's sound and choosing gear don't conflict. Rather, precisely those who trust their hands have reason to choose the vessel.
