Talk about an amp's sound and the topic usually stays on the panel. How much gain, how the treble and bass were set, whether the boost was on. What you can see as a knob is easy to put into words.
But much of the judgment that decides the amp's very character — whether it's raw or composed, whether it crushes when pushed or returns endlessly even — is already fixed at design time, outside the panel, inside the circuit.
Among those, the one that matters most yet gets discussed least is negative feedback (NFB).
What is negative feedback doing, anyway?
Negative feedback is a circuit that takes part of the power stage's output and returns it, phase-inverted, to an earlier stage.
Mix part of the output into the input in a "canceling" direction and the amplification's wildness is suppressed. Distortion drops, the frequency response flattens, the output impedance falls, and the speaker's motion becomes easier to control. Originally it was a technique for smoothing out, at the circuit level, the spread and nonlinearity of tubes and parts. A contrivance for making things "correct," in an audio sense.
On paper and on the meter, this is purely a "stabilizing" circuit. Distortion falls, the response flattens. It looks like nothing but good.
But in a guitar amp, that "good" becomes the character directly. To compose is also to erase wildness.
A "stabilizing circuit" becomes the knob for raw and composed
Apply deep negative feedback and the sound composes, tightens, becomes obedient. Distortion is suppressed, the range is wide and clear, and it returns evenly no matter how you play. A well-mannered, controlled sound.
Make the feedback shallow, or cut it, and the sound transforms. Dirtier, rawer, less compressed, the power stage starts to run wild. Picking dynamics come straight to the front, and turned up loud, it distorts as if collapsing.
Same tubes, same output stage, and this one amount of feedback makes it sound like a completely different amp. A "circuit for stability" actually works as the knob that decides "rawness" and "composure." And that knob usually isn't handed to the player.
Actually, you do touch this — the truth about Presence
I said it's "inside the circuit, out of reach," but precisely, one part shows its face on the panel.
The Presence on many amps is not the simple tone control its name suggests. Presence lifts the highs by reducing negative feedback in the high band. Where treble is an EQ that "adds highs," Presence "pulls the feedback off the highs and lets them run wild there." The more you raise it, the weaker the feedback's grip on the highs, and they come out sharp and forward.
By the same idea, some amps have Depth/Resonance that manipulates the feedback on the low side. Raise it and the low-end power stage runs wild, the speaker's motion loosens, and a thumping bloom appears.
In other words, Presence and Depth are a small part of the "invisible design judgment," opened up to the player. When we turn them, thinking we're tweaking tone, we're actually moving, after the fact, that amp's feedback design — its degree of wildness — by hand.
An amp's temperament shows in its attitude toward feedback
Attitude toward negative feedback mirrors the musical view of an era and a maker.
In an age that assumed high volume, Fender applied feedback fairly firmly, building a wide, flat, clear-sighted clean foundation. The Vox AC30 ran shallow (or nearly no) feedback, keeping as character that distinctive compression and the harmonics that push forward when turned up — the ring called "chime." A design that made the wildness a flavor rather than erasing it. Marshall used Presence well, achieving both tightness and a sharp high-end wildness at once.
Eventually, in the 1990s, as high gain became "something to control," feedback design grew more deliberate. To pull deep distortion together tightly, the power stage mustn't run too wild. Tighten with feedback where it should be tightened, keep the response you want — not just the structure of the distortion but how that distortion returns got built into the design.
The amount of negative feedback isn't a mere measurement. It's the designer's values themselves — how much the amp should resist the playing, and how much it should yield to it.
What players call "playing feel"
This design hits the hands before the ears.
An amp with shallow feedback is sensitive to picking dynamics. Hit hard and it crushes; ease off and it unravels. The breath of the performance returns as the swell of the sound. An amp with deep feedback, by contrast, returns evenly and stably whether you dig in or barely touch. Dependable, but — for better or worse — the sound doesn't change much "on your terms."
Same amount of distortion, and this return is completely different. When a player says "it feels good to play" or "this amp sticks to my hands," the truth of it often includes this feedback design. Less a matter of tone than of temporal return — how it draws the time from push to rise to collapse to settle.
So playing feel, sensory and hard to word, exists definitely as design. A single signal returning, phase-inverted, inside the circuit sways the feel in your hands.
The more invisible the judgment, the more it needs recording
Here a recording problem arises.
Gain and tone are visible as knob positions. They can be written as numbers. But feedback design is inside the circuit, unreadable from outside. Only a small part is touchable through Presence; most stays fixed as the designer first decided. And yet the tightness, the rawness, the playing feel are all decided there.
So to keep an amp's "character," writing down only the visible knob positions isn't enough. Match the same gain and tone, and the feedback-driven "return" still isn't reproduced. What should be kept isn't the numbers — it's the state itself: how that one amp actually sounded, and returned, under given conditions.

Negative feedback, wearing the plain face of a "circuit for stability," is actually the design of character — deciding an amp's rawness, tightness, compression, and playing feel. Deepen it and it composes; make it shallow and it runs wild. Presence and Depth are only a window onto part of that invisible judgment, opened to the player.
It wasn't a matter of technical superiority but a choice of values — what kind of playing experience the amp wants to return. Fender's clarity, Vox's chime, Marshall's tightness — behind the character of great amps, there's usually an attitude toward feedback.
Next time you play an amp, turn the Presence a little. The instant the highs start to run sharp and wild, you're moving, with your fingertip, the "degree of wildness" the designer set deep in the circuit. Inside the feel returning to your hands, that amp's philosophy is hiding.
