Most celebrated guitarists have "their sound." Over a long time they settle on an ideal tone, protect it and refine it. Their gear history is told as the road toward that ideal.
John McLaughlin is not that.
Lay out his career from the equipment side and a consistent "his sound" is hard to find. There is a loud, distorted electric guitar. There is a modified acoustic. There are nylon strings. There is a device for playing a synthesizer from a guitar. There is MIDI. It looks scattered.
But viewed along another axis, a single line runs through it. McLaughlin repeatedly rebuilt the role of the guitar itself, and the interface his fingers touch, so that the music he was trying to play at that moment could be played by his body. What he protected was not the sound. What he rebuilt was the tool.
This article reads his gear history not as a pilgrimage through famous instruments, but as a history of interface design that changes the range of music he can play.
Bringing jazz guitar into rock's sound pressure
The starting point is jazz. Around Tony Williams Lifetime and Miles Davis, McLaughlin was playing Les Paul-type guitars.
The problem here is simple but large: carrying the vocabulary of jazz guitar into the volume and texture of rock. A thin, delicate tone gets buried at that pressure. Keep the fluency of jazz while sounding electrically large and strong. Making both work was the first design problem.
Mahavishnu — a double neck and 100 watts turning complexity into voices
In early Mahavishnu Orchestra the problem becomes more extreme.
McLaughlin takes up a Gibson EDS-1275 — a double neck with six and twelve strings stacked. And a contemporary account from 1972 records a 100-watt Marshall Super Lead, three Marshall bottoms, and a feed to the PA. Considerable volume, in other words.
What matters here is what that configuration made possible. Inside Mahavishnu's dense, fast arrangements, switching between six and twelve strings and distorting at high pressure became a means of making one guitar sound as multiple voices. The saturation, the volume, the six/twelve switching are not decoration. They were an extension of the playing interface, so that one guitarist could carry complicated music.
A caution, though. Explaining this Marshall volume purely as "clarification for the sake of separation" tells only half of it. The sound of early Mahavishnu also used the aggression of overload itself, and the roughness of distortion, deliberately. Clarity and violence sound at the same time here.
Shakti — rebuilding an acoustic for South Indian technique
Then a large turn arrives. Shakti.
From loud electric guitar, McLaughlin moves toward the acoustic. But this was not simply picking up a quieter guitar. He rebuilt the acoustic guitar itself into a device for playing South Indian music.
The key is the scalloped fingerboard. The board is carved deeply under the strings, creating space between string and wood. This was a modification to make gamaka — the technique of bending pitch widely and smoothly, learned from the South Indian veena — possible under a guitarist's fingers. Sympathetic strings were added, building sustained tone and drone into the instrument itself.
One misunderstanding to avoid. This instrument is not a prop for "imitating" Indian music. It is a hybrid interface for handling, with one body, the gamaka and drone he had studied along with the harmony of jazz. He did not change tools; he implemented his learned technique into the tool.
Guitar Trio — adapting wholesale to a nylon-string ensemble
McLaughlin's interface design does not stop at electric volume or South Indian modification. It reaches somewhere entirely different in direction.
In the guitar trio with Paco de Lucía and Al Di Meola he plays nylon-string acoustic. What is needed here is a different right hand, a different volume, and a position inside three acoustic guitars weaving into each other without amplification. McLaughlin optimises both instrument and technique toward what this music demands. The nylon-string trio has a tight, closely-breathing propulsion that only this format produces. It exists because he brought his whole body to meet that ensemble.
What is interesting is that he has said he moved away from the bending technique he developed in Shakti after this transition. But this is neither a failure nor a retreat. To genuinely commit to one music is to move yourself, bodily, toward what that music demands. So technique from one period does not necessarily continue into the next. That is not a weakness but evidence of how thorough each adaptation is. McLaughlin does not competently cover everything; each time, he becomes a player of that music.
Synclavier — turning the guitar into an input device for composition
In the 1980s, McLaughlin extends the instrument in yet another direction.
Through a Roland G-303 guitar controller and a Digital Guitar Control Unit, he plays the Synclavier — the enormous digital synthesis and composition system of the era — from the guitar. Plucking a string converts pitch and dynamics into digital code, which sounds the Synclavier and builds orchestration.
Here the guitar is no longer only "an instrument that makes sound." It has become an input device for composition and orchestration, sending out pitch and intensity. The act of playing stays the same; what sounds downstream has been swapped wholesale.
(How far the Synclavier was assigned, on which works and to which timbres, needs checking source by source. What can be said here is only that the design idea of using the guitar as an input device appeared clearly in this period.)
Godin, MIDI and PRS — moving the centre from a giant dedicated system to a stable instrument
In recent years McLaughlin shifts the weight once more.
A 2011 gear feature describes him choosing a Godin Freeway for its tone and MIDI, combined with tube preamps and time-based effects. The "centre that sends out varied timbres," once placed in a giant dedicated machine like the Synclavier, moved toward one instrument with stable playability and an interchangeable signal chain. In later years he uses PRS.
McLaughlin has described his view of instruments this way — you remove what gets in the way until the problems are gone and the instrument becomes part of your body. From a stage of extending capability through a giant system, to a stage that prioritises the physicality of playing and adds or subtracts signal chain around it. Here again he is not protecting a sound. He is redesigning the relationship between the playing body and the music beyond it.
What runs through it is not tone but interface design
Lay it out again.
Jazz into rock's sound pressure (Les Paul type). Complexity turned into voices (double neck and 100-watt Marshall). An acoustic rebuilt for South Indian technique (scalloped board and sympathetic strings). Adapting bodily to a nylon-string ensemble (guitar trio). The guitar as an input device for composition (Synclavier). The centre moved from a dedicated system to a stable instrument (Godin / MIDI / PRS).
Lined up as "a pilgrimage through famous instruments," this looks like an incoherent, messy list. Lined up as "redesigning the input device so that the music he wants to play can be played by his body," a single line runs through it, remarkably straight.
What McLaughlin protected was not a particular tone. He kept trying to widen the range of music he could perform. To do that he rebuilt the role of the instrument and the surface his fingers touch, without hesitation. A master's gear history is often told as a pilgrimage toward an ideal sound. In his case, reading it as "a history of interface design for increasing the music he can play" makes far more sense.
Finally, a note on scope. This piece relies on his official materials, contemporary accounts and later interviews. There are many places where the player himself declines to assert technical detail. The specifics of the Rex Bogue "Double Rainbow" double neck, the actual recording chains of each era, the use of Mesa/Boogie and of speakers and cabinets, and the work-by-work assignment of the Synclavier cannot be settled from photographs and lists alone; they need further confirmation. So this is not an assertion about gear, but one reading: that he kept designing input devices rather than protecting a sound.
