When "a good amp" still meant one thing: the amp worldview before multi-channel

There was a time when "a good amp" needed no qualifier. Fender Twin, Marshall Plexi, Vox AC30, Hiwatt — one amp held one sound, and good-or-bad could be spoken on a single yardstick. That yardstick broke through the multi-channel shift that began in the late 1970s. Once you had to say what an amp was good *for*, evaluation itself changed shape. What did the word "classic" ever point to? A re-reading of forty years of guitar amps as the story of a measuring stick coming apart.

Suppose someone today says they want "a good amp."

A question comes back almost at once. Good for what? Home recording, or the stage? Clean, or high-gain? Inside a band, or playing alone?

That need to ask back is, in fact, not very old.

There was a time when "a good amp" got through on its own. You didn't have to append a use; roughly the same thing was imagined. And the process by which that phrase stopped getting through is, itself, the design history of the guitar amp.

One amp held one sound

Amps of the fifties and sixties could, structurally, produce only one sound.

Fender's Twin Reverb, Bassman, Deluxe. Marshall's JTM45 and the so-called Plexi. The Vox AC30. The Hiwatt DR103. Orange's early models. Ampeg's various amps.

Some had more than one channel, but that was not "switching tones" — it was choosing among inputs. Even Marshall's four inputs were there to select the character difference between Normal and Bright, or to jumper and blend them. The idea of stepping on a footswitch to change your sound mid-song simply did not exist.

Distortion, too, was not something you built separately. Turn the volume up and it distorts. There was no other way.

In other words, in the amps of that era volume and tone were not separated.

In that state, the axis of evaluation collapses to one. Does it sound good when driven loud? That is all.

So the phrase "a good amp" held together. If there is only one yardstick, a single dimension is enough for comparison.

Even within one yardstick, there were differences of direction

That said, the amps of the time were not all facing the same way. Even with a single yardstick, each maker sat at a different mark along it.

The Vox AC30, through the EF86 and the later Top Boost circuit, has a distinctive presence in the upper-mids. With its Class-A-like operation and smallish output, it begins to break up early.

The Hiwatt DR103 took the opposite design philosophy. With high supply voltage and a large output transformer, it holds an extremely wide clean headroom — an amp that stays clean right up to full.

Fender's Twin Reverb, likewise, made clean capacity its subject. The Bassman, conversely, is the amp whose clean circuit became the starting point for Marshall's distortion.

Ampeg's SVT was built for bass with an incomparable mass of hardware. Sound City, Selmer, Orange — even within Britain, makers with clearly different circuit habits stood side by side.

In the US, the Music Man that Leo Fender was involved with after leaving Fender put a combination of a solid-state preamp and a tube power stage into practice. And on the RD series (Reverb-Distortion), it even carried a circuit that switched distortion in and out by footswitch. The mixing of methods, and the very idea of switching sounds within a single amp, were already sprouting at this time.

So there were choices. But that choice was not a choice of use — it was a choice of character.

Switching like the Music Man's distortion channel was still the exception in this era. Most amps, whichever you chose, made only one sound. So the way you bought one was to pick the character that suited your music. This structure is what produced the strength of that later bond — "that band, that amp." Because one amp corresponded to one sound, it also stayed in memory one-to-one.

The responsibility for tone lay on the player's side

If one amp holds only one sound, then variation in tone has to be made somewhere else.

Roll the guitar volume down. Switch pickups. Change the picking. Move where you play along the string.

That this era's players used their hands so thoroughly was less an aesthetic than a necessity. If there are no dials on the amp, you do it by hand.

And the important thing is that the amp was designed for exactly that. In the shallow-drive region, the size of the input shows up directly as the amount of distortion. Roll the volume down a little and it returns to clean; dig in and it breaks up. The amp was a device that responded honestly to the player's hands.

The reason the word "feel" is so strongly bound to the amps of this era is precisely that. The amp did not decide the tone all the way; it left a margin to the player.

The evaluation axis was single not because comparison was simple, but because the amp was asked to do only one job.

Loudness was a constraint that bound the design

There is, however, a side effect here that cannot be ignored. To get a good sound, you had to make a loud sound.

In the late sixties, as venues grew, amps kept raising their output. Marshall's 100-watt heads and stacks, the Hiwatt 100, the big-output machines from Sunn and Acoustic. The loudness race was, for the time, a rational evolution.

But entering the seventies, that big output became a shackle. In the studio and the club alike, you couldn't run it full.

This is where the master volume arrives. Marshall introduced it around 1975, and almost every maker followed. Build the distortion in the preamp; decide the power-stage loudness separately.

This was not a mere convenience improvement. In separating volume from tone, it amounts to a rupture in design philosophy. And from the moment they separated, the evaluation axes begin to multiply.

Does it sound good at low volume too? How much does that differ from the loud sound? Is the preamp's distortion natural?

One yardstick starts to be not enough.

Multi-channel amps snapped the yardstick

The yardstick was snapped not by a single event but by a multi-channel shift that unfolded over about a decade.

Already in 1978, Mesa/Boogie's Mark II realized footswitchable switching between rhythm and lead. The idea of treating distortion as something you design and step on had already taken shape within the seventies. From there, Marshall's JCM800 2205/2210 standardized two channels, the Soldano SLO-100 in 1987 presented a form that fully separated clean and lead, and by the late eighties programmable preamps like the ADA MP-1 appeared. A single amp holding several sounds went, over that decade, from exception to standard.

Once that happens, the judgment "a good amp" no longer functions.

An amp whose clean is good but whose lead is ordinary. An amp whose high-gain is superb but whose clean is useless. An amp that is plain on its own but cuts through in a band. And the reverse. Every one of them can be called a good amp — and cannot.

Here the language of evaluation changes. Instead of good-or-bad, people begin to speak of fit to a use. Follow the magazine copy and advertising of this period and you can watch words like "versatile" and "handles every style" multiply rapidly. To be able to sell versatility means, turned around, that not being versatile can become a fault.

One yardstick broke and was replaced by several. Further, in the nineties, rack systems accelerated the tendency. Preamp, power amp, effects, EQ — once gear splits by role, evaluation too splits by role. "A good preamp" and "a good power amp" became separate conversations.

A recording-only machine settled the split

The product that shows most clearly that the yardstick had broken came out in the early eighties.

A small box that completes itself in headphones, putting out a "finished" guitar sound that already includes compression, chorus, and echo. Running a stack live was never the point; it was designed as a tool for recording and practice.

This was a product completely outside the evaluation axis until then. The question "does it sound good driven loud?" simply cannot be applied to it. And yet, at the time, it was actually used on many records.

In the same period, programmable preamps like the ADA MP-1 appeared and rack systems came into their own. The preamp is now evaluated as a preamp, the power amp as a power amp.

Once this happens, even what the phrase "a good amp" points to grows vague. Is it the head? The whole system? The recorded sound?

Uses branched, gear divided its labor, and the language of evaluation couldn't keep up.

The reason we now ask "good for what?" when someone says "a good amp" is that we live in a world where that branching is already complete.

What the word "classic" pointed to

Laid out this way, the meaning of the word "classic" starts to look a little different too.

Many of the amps still called classics are products of the era when the evaluation axis was single. Plexi, AC30, Bassman, Twin, Dumble.

These are classics not because they excel at every use. The opposite, rather: because the use is narrowed to one, they are complete within that one. And in an era of a single evaluation axis, that was enough.

That modern amps are sometimes said to "become classics less easily" is probably not because performance dropped. In a world where uses have branched, which axis you measure on changes the evaluation, and universal agreement can no longer be reached.

This overlaps with something I wrote before — "Is an amp that didn't sell a failure?" The market's evaluation is no more than a reflection of the yardstick dominant in its time. Once you know there are several yardsticks, there is a point to digging buried designs back up.

You can't put it back to one, but you can choose

So was the era of a single evaluation axis the happier one?

Not necessarily. That there is only one yardstick also means that music which doesn't fit that yardstick goes unvalued from the start. The way solid-state was treated, which I wrote about before, was itself a result of being measured, over and over, against the single yardstick of "tubes."

The axes multiplied simply because the choices multiplied. That in itself is not a bad thing.

But in a world where the axes have multiplied, you have to decide for yourself which axis you measure on. Once you didn't have to decide. Everyone held the same yardstick, so if you bought what was called good, it mostly fit.

Now it doesn't fit. For someone whose main work is home recording and someone who plays big rooms, the definition of a good amp differs at the root. It differs, too, between someone who makes tight rhythm the lead and someone who supports a vocal.

That the phrase "I want a good amp" hangs in the air is because of this. So the first thing to decide is not the gear. It's under what conditions, what music, and how you want it to sound.

Only once that is decided can the yardstick narrow to one. And once the yardstick is one, then — just as in that era — good and bad turn out to be surprisingly clear to see.

The yardstick is no longer given. It has become something you choose for yourself.
