Most amps have three knobs: bass, middle, treble. The tone stack — the most basic EQ.
They look the same on every amp. But where this EQ sits in the circuit changes what it does entirely. Before the distortion, or after. The difference is plain, but decisive.
Placed at the front, it changes the distortion itself
Put the tone stack before the distortion (or ahead of the following gain stage), and the EQ shapes "the signal that's about to distort."
The classic case is the passive tone stack of a Marshall or Fender. That Bass/Middle/Treble sits after the first stage and before the following gain stage. So turning down the Bass on a Marshall doesn't just cut lows — it changes what gets distorted downstream and in the power stage, and the distortion itself tightens. That trimming the lows before distorting tightens a high-gain amp works on the same principle. Boost the mids before distorting and the distortion becomes thick and pushy. Here the EQ isn't tonal correction; it's a device that carves the material of the distortion in advance.
On a front-EQ amp, turning a knob moves the character of the distortion with it. Same gain, and depending on the EQ position, a different distortion. Here, the EQ is part of the design of the distortion.
Placed at the back, it tidies the distorted sound
Put the tone stack after the distortion, and the EQ shapes "an already-distorted sound."
A clear example is the Vox AC30's "Cut" control. It sits at the very back of the signal, after the phase-inverter stage, and doesn't move the distortion — it only trims the highs of the finished sound. A finishing EQ, exactly. The 5-band graphic EQ the Mesa/Boogie Mark series carries is also in the preamp's back end, carving the bands of an already-distorted sound. That scooped-mid Mark-series metal tone is made by working the EQ behind the distortion.
It doesn't change the quality of the distortion; it tidies the band balance. If a front-EQ amp feels like "making the distortion," a back-EQ amp feels closer to "plating the distortion you made." The same three knobs (or sliders) change role by where they sit.
The two philosophies are also a difference of musical view
Neither is superior.
If you want to carve the distortion itself with EQ, the front-placement philosophy fits. If you want to fix the distortion and then tidy it honestly, the back-placement philosophy fits. And many modern multi-feature high-gain amps — ENGL, Diezel, Peavey 5150-family — carry both: an EQ conditioning the signal before the preamp, and an EQ finishing behind the distortion (a graphic EQ or a post-loop EQ), letting you use both philosophies in one amp.
So the tone stack's position mirrors the designer's idea of "where they want you to make the sound." Same three knobs to look at, but the Marshall-style front philosophy and the back philosophy of a Vox Cut or a Mesa graphic EQ are doing entirely different things.
From the outside, you can't tell which
Here, a recording viewpoint.
The three knobs wear the same face on every amp. But front or back isn't visible from outside. And that difference shows up in how the sound changes when you turn a knob — does the distortion move with it, or only the finish?
So to know how an amp's EQ behaves, matching the numbers isn't enough. You need to capture how each knob actually behaved — together with the sound as it was ringing.
