A standard profile is not something you fix with EQ

When you want to change a sound on the Kemper, most people reach for Gain and EQ first. On a standard profile, that soon hits a strange ceiling — and pulls you away from the amp's character. The reason is simple: a standard profile's EQ is not the real amp's tone stack. That's why CSL records separate settings instead.

When you want to change a sound on the Kemper, most people first turn the Gain and EQ knobs.

It's a natural move. But do it on a standard profile and you'll feel an odd ceiling partway. Raise the bass and it won't bloom the way the real amp does. Add treble and it just gets thin and hard. You drift further and further from "this amp's character."

The reason is clear. A standard profile's EQ is not the real amp's knobs.

A standard profile's EQ is not the amp's tone stack

First, the mechanism. Get this, and everything after connects.

A standard profile captures how an amp sounded at one setting — like a single photograph. The gain, the way the EQ sits, the compression: all of it is burned into that still image as "the state of one instant." The Kemper's Gain and EQ are a general-purpose correction applied on top of that photo — they don't reproduce the real amp's internal tone-stack circuit. It's the same difference as brightening a photo in retouching versus changing the light falling on the subject. Two entirely different things.

This is decisive. A real amp's treble and bass knobs don't simply raise and lower bands. The tone stack is entangled with the circuit that makes the distortion; turn a knob and the quality of the gain, the compression, even how the amp bites when you play, all move together. Raise the bass and it isn't just more low end — that low end drives the distortion, changing the whole sound's push and grit. A standard profile's bolted-on EQ has none of this coupling. Turn it and the band moves, but the "change of expression" the real amp shows at that knob position doesn't follow. So the more you turn, the closer you get to a thin "corrected" sound and the further from the living "amp" sound. The ceiling you feel isn't imagination — it's a necessary consequence of the mechanism.

Liquid Profiling models that circuit

Kemper's later feature, Liquid Profiling, is the answer to this limit.

Liquid Profiling models the behavior of the real amp's tone stack itself. So when you turn the Kemper's treble or bass, it responds as if you'd turned the real amp's knobs. Which also means: that's a Liquid Profile story, not a standard-profile one.

What CSL currently offers is the standard profile. That's exactly why we don't assume "sort it out with EQ correction."

CSL's answer: record the settings separately

Rather than approximate with correction, we actually change the real amp's settings and record each one.

For instance, on our first product, the Greco GVA CUSTOM, we captured the amp's Treble and Bass knobs at four positions: T2.5/B5, T5/B5, T7/B4, T10/B7. From a round, dark setting to a bright, open one — the sound the real amp actually made at each knob position becomes four separate records, as-is.

So if you want it brighter, you don't raise the EQ — you switch to the profile recorded with the Treble up. That's not correction; it's choosing a different setting of the real amp. The whole expression changes with it.

Which is why choosing matters

Under this approach, the number of profiles isn't "how many variations" — it's "how many real-amp settings you can choose from."

That's why CSL records different settings, different mics, different positions. Read the name and you know which setting it captures. Rather than forcing an approach with the EQ knobs, picking a take that was recorded at the target setting from the start gets you to your destination while keeping the real amp's texture.

Of course, lightly tidying a profile after loading it is fine — the small adjustments to sit it in a track are normal use. But the skeleton of a sound isn't something you build with correction; it's something you choose from settings recorded separately. That's CSL's position.

In short

A standard profile's EQ is not the real amp's tone stack. So the more you correct with the knobs, the further you get from the real amp's sound. Reproducing the real knob behavior is Liquid Profiling's territory.

CSL doesn't paper over the standard profile with correction. We change the real amp's settings and record them separately, so you can choose. The GVA's four Treble/Bass settings are that idea, made concrete.
