Guitar-amp tone controls have barely changed for a long time.
Treble, Middle, Bass. At most, Presence is added.
These three are usually made by a circuit called a "passive tone stack" — a circuit that needs no power, doesn't amplify the signal, and only cuts.
Turn to bass and the scenery differs. Sending an instrument with an onboard preamp into an amp that further has active EQ isn't rare.
The same kind of instrument — picking up strings with a pickup and ringing them through an amp — yet the EQ thinking differs considerably.
Here a question arises. Why didn't guitar amps make active EQ mainstream?
Is it because guitar doesn't need active EQ? Or did it just not turn out that way?
A passive tone stack is not "correction" but "voice"
First, sort out what the passive tone stack, the guitar-amp standard, is.
Passive EQ doesn't lift the signal. It's basically a "cutting" circuit. Even when you feel you're raising a knob, what happens is that another band relatively drops.
Interference between bands is also large. Move the Bass and how the Middle is heard changes. Raise the Treble and the amount of Bass changes. Each knob doesn't move independently.
The variable range is limited too. How the mids drop — that very way of dropping becomes the amp's individuality.
So a passive tone stack isn't "a correction device that tidies to flat." Rather, the imperfection of the circuit is the amp's voice directly.
Here the idea differs from a studio EQ aiming at flat. Not tidying cleanly is itself accepted as part of guitar-amp-ness.
So it doesn't follow that replacing this tone stack wholesale with an active circuit makes an "upgrade." An over-tidy EQ is a different sound.
The pitfall of "the tone stack is before the distortion"
Here's an oft-heard explanation: "a guitar tone stack is before the distortion, so its role differs from an active EQ that lifts at the back stage."
This seems plausible but isn't accurate.
Look at a general Marshall-style or Fender-style preamp and the tone stack is often placed in the latter half of the preamp. Not necessarily right after the first distortion stage.
So you can't declare "the tone stack is always before the main distortion." The placement differs by amp.
So the simple reasoning "it decides the distortion, so it can't be active" doesn't apply to all amps.
More accurately, it's this: the guitar-amp tone stack settled historically as a circuit that limits bands and makes them interfere. That distinctive effect bonded with "that sound."
Not superiority, but settling. This distinction is the foundation of this whole piece.
The exception of Mesa/Boogie: separating front-stage tone and back-stage graphic EQ
There's an exceptional design within guitar amps that separates EQ by role — Mesa/Boogie's Mark family.
The Mark family has both a front-stage tone control (Treble / Bass / Middle) and a back-stage 5-band graphic EQ.
The front-stage tone decides how it distorts — the place that makes the texture of the distortion's entrance.
The back-stage graphic EQ makes the final band balance after distorting — the place that shapes the sound that comes out.
Even the same "raise the lows," raising the front Bass knob and raising the back graphic-EQ low slider give clearly different results. The former changes how it distorts; the latter changes the volume of the output.
The so-called V-shaped slider setting often used on the Mark family is the very idea of back-stage EQ. After deciding the distortion quality, it adds and subtracts cut and weight.
The rack preamp Triaxis too inherits this philosophy of "make the distortion at the front, tidy at the back." Mesa, early on, didn't think of EQ as monolithic.
But note: don't discuss this Mark-family design as the same thing as a general Marshall/Fender tone stack. Mesa, separating front-stage tone and back-stage graphic, is rather the minority.
What happens when you insert an EQ into the FX Loop?
A back-stage EQ like Mesa's can do something close even without a dedicated design — inserting a graphic EQ into the FX Loop's Send/Return.
An EQ before the amp works on how it distorts, because the form of the signal entering the amp changes.
Against that, an EQ in the FX Loop works on the already-distorted sound. It leans toward tidying cut and balance — a use close to Mesa's back-stage graphic.
With high gain, this works especially. Add lows to make a foundation. Cut low-mid mud. Cut around 750Hz to make a V. Lift 1–2kHz to make cut. Suppress the stabbing component above 4kHz. Such adjustments can be made against the already-distorted sound.
But it doesn't become completely the same as an internal graphic EQ.
Whether the loop is serial or parallel. The loop's level setting. Headroom after Return. Whether there's a Master after Return. How much the power stage is distorting. These change the result.
For manageability, a serial loop basically works more honestly.
What this shows: even on guitar, the operation of "actively moving bands after distorting" has actually been done. It just hasn't become a standard feature of the amp itself; the demand has existed for a long time.
So why did active EQ become standard on bass?
In contrast to guitar, active EQ became normal on bass. It's clearer thinking of the reasons separately.
Bass handles the lows. Lows are strongly affected by the venue and room. Change the place and how the lows come out changes greatly. So a means to correct quickly at the site is needed.
Sending to PA via DI is common too. The need to tidy the sound before the amp is greater than with guitar.
The techniques are wide too. Fingerstyle, pick, slap. The band balance changes for each. Being able to actively lift and cut at hand is convenient.
So on bass, the amp strongly has the character of "a box that manages the sound."
The instrument's onboard preamp has a role too. Not only making the tone but stabilizing the output. Lowering impedance, keeping the highs even on a long cable, being strong for line sending.
Sorted: the instrument-side active EQ is character-making and signal stabilization. The amp-side active EQ is correction at the site. The roles split.
On bass, both had a clear practical necessity. So it became standard.
Technically, active EQ is effective on guitar too
Here's the important point. Setting aside the distortion-entrance story, much of what was cited for bass applies to guitar as is.
Lows running wild at a venue happens on guitar too. How the mids come out changing with the cabinet happens too. There are scenes wanting to adjust cut, wanting to send stably to PA, wanting to correct in recording.
So technically, active EQ is amply effective on guitar too.
And in fact, guitar is already massively active-EQ'd.
Modelers and profilers carry graphic and parametric EQ as a matter of course. DAWs have EQ. Bands move even when loading an IR. There's the PA console's channel EQ, the rack's outboard EQ, the floor EQ pedal.
Guitarists pass through active EQ all over, without noticing.
The problem narrows to the single point that it didn't go mainstream in the form of "the amp's own 3-band EQ." Not a story of ability, but of placement.
In the '80s, active-EQ guitars certainly existed
The sense that "active, assertive EQ doesn't suit guitar" is actually not universal.
Look back at the '80s and there were many guitars with active circuits.
The spread of active pickups. Models with mid-boost circuits. Tone circuits with wide variable range. Modded Strats with boost. The varied circuits loaded in super-Strat-style guitars. Various preamps built in the mod culture.
These meshed well with the sound-making of the time. Rack-based systems. High gain. Floating tremolos. A line-ish, crafted sound. Active EQ was compatible with such directions.
So there were certainly buds for active EQ to take root on the guitar side.
The '90s return changed the flow
But from the '90s on, a swing-back happens — the vintage return.
Passive pickups. The plain connection of plugging straight into a tube amp. The culture of adding distortion with pedals. The re-appraisal of old Fender / Marshall / Vox values. A direction valuing picking nuance. A mature texture, a sense affirming imperfection.
In this flow, active EQ came to be seen as an "'80s-style modern feature." Plainness was preferred over convenience.
As a result, the positioning of EQ split clearly between bass and guitar.
On bass, active EQ became practically standard equipment.
On guitar, active EQ became an option tinged with era. Not denied, but it didn't become an essential feature of the amp itself.
The circumstance that it can be substituted endlessly by external gear is large too. Without loading it in the amp, a pedal, rack, or modeler suffices.
How CSL thinks about EQ

From the EQ viewpoint, one sorting is needed here: the amp's own tone stack is "part of that amp's voice," a different thing from a correction EQ added later.
How a passive tone stack works, the band interference, how the mids drop. These are included in the reason that amp is that amp. So the object of recording isn't the flat sound after tidying, but that amp's ring including the tone circuit.
Meanwhile, the work of actively moving bands after distorting can be left as the freedom of the profile's user. The EQ on the profiler, the console EQ, the pedal EQ. Move those freely in post.
This distinction overlaps directly with the structure seen in this piece. The amp's own EQ is voice; the back-stage active EQ is a site tool.
What CSL wants to keep is the latter — the amp's own voice before it's overwritten.
In short
Guitar amps didn't make active EQ mainstream not because it was inferior.
The imperfection of the passive tone stack settled directly as the amp's individuality. This is the foundation.
There are exceptions like Mesa/Boogie separating front-stage tone and back-stage graphic, and inserting an EQ into the FX Loop enables a use close to back-stage EQ. The demand itself has existed for a long time.
On bass, from circumstances of low-end control, site variation, DI sending, and varied techniques, active EQ became a practical standard.
On guitar, active circuits nearly spread in the '80s, but the '90s return saw them as a modern feature, and since external gear could substitute, they didn't become the amp's standard.
Sorted: on bass, a practical standard. On guitar, an '80s-style option. And on the amp itself, the passive imperfection itself becomes the value.
Not a technical superiority, but a difference of historical and cultural settling.
