Cynic did not convert from death metal to clean playing. From the start they placed distortion, clean tone, a vocoder, fretless bass and guitar synth inside the same arrangement, designing heaviness not as a total quantity of low end and gain but as the space in which unlike timbres can alternate and pass through. From 1993's Focus, through the fifteen-year gap before Traced in Air, the roughly thirty guitar tracks of Carbon-Based Anatomy, the reduction to two tones on Kindly Bent to Free Us, and Ascension Codes after the loss of two members in 2020 — a gear history read as the distribution of signal inside an arrangement.

1990s guitar amps are big. Heavy. And multi-feature. Line them up again and this era's amps share a direction: enlarge the chassis, raise the output, add channels, add a loop, load MIDI, add a line out. They tried to pack everything possible into one box. Excessive by modern eyes — but at the time, it was the rational answer.

How to see a 5881-spec Marshall

Say 'the Marshall sound' and something comes to mind — the mid push, the slightly raw distortion, that feel of coming forward when turned up. You often hear that tubes support that sound, and that Marshall's tube is the EL34. But the Marshall in your hands isn't always EL34.

Looking at a Kemper profile lineup, profiles of the same amp name sometimes split into a 'standard' and a 'Boosted' version. This isn't a mere part-number difference. A judgment — whether to treat a boosted sound as a separate capture, or not make it at all — is made each time.

What should you write in a Kemper profile's product description?

When listing Kemper profiles as products, you sometimes hesitate over what to write. Write only the sonic impression and the buyer has no material to judge. Pack in too much information and what matters stops getting through. CSL decides the items in advance: Amp Type, Gain, Center/Edge, Raw/Boosted, use, and caveats. These six.
